Internal leaks account for 25% of insurance claims related to water damage.

With leaks wasting hundreds of millions of liters of drinking water each year, it’s time for action.

We’re calling for a policy that mandates leak detection systems in all buildings by 2030, ensuring rapid alerts for any in-property leaks within 24 hours.

Our key policy ask
Require all buildings to be fitted with leak detection.

Why is this important?
Around 10% of homes and 25% of businesses have internal leaks. This is wasting hundreds of millions of litres of drinking water and is also the cause of 25% of insurance claims. We are calling for a new policy that every property should be fitted with a leak alarm by 2030 capable of rapidly detecting and notifying the bill payer within 24 hours if they have an in-property leak. Where possible this should be a smart water meter but, if not possible by 2030, then an alternative leak detection device should be installed.(See strategic objective 9 here).

What’s the latest?
We have submitted our ask to government and await their response.
