Support the planned smart water meter roll-out
In England and Wales
450 million liters saved daily by 2050 with smart meters.
10 million smart meters to be installed by 2030.
15% average reduction in household water use with smart meters.

Smart water meters can revolutionise how we manage water use – providing households and businesses with the insights they need to reduce waste and detect leaks.

However, outdated policies still prevent northern water companies from charging customers based on actual usage. We’re calling on the government to fully back the smart meter roll-out, set to ramp up in 2025, which could save over 450 million litres daily by 2050.

Our key policy ask
We want to see support for the planned smart water meter roll-out in England and Wales and the removal the archaic restrictions that prevent water companies in the north of England from universally charging customers based on their water usage, not house size. Why is this important?
Smart water meters provide vital water use information that supports households and businesses in using water wisely and reducing leakage. Government needs to get behind the planned roll-out which ramps up in 2025 and will save over 450 Mld by 2050. (See strategic objective 2 here).

What’s the latest?
Water companies are planning to install over 10 million smart meters in England and Wales over the next five years.
