Urgently increase water saving ambition
in new development
New water-saving standards could cut average household water use from 125 litres to 100 litres per person per day.
Enhanced water efficiency in new homes could save £45 per household annually on energy bills related to water heating.
Increasing water efficiency ambition by 20% could save 50 million liters of water daily for every million new homes built.

With current water efficiency standards falling short, it’s time for the government to raise the bar for new homes.

Updating Building Regulations to drive water-saving innovations, reuse systems, and reduced leakage could make a huge impact—saving 50 million litres daily for every million new homes built.

Our key policy ask

Urgently increase water saving ambition in new developments.

Why is this important?

Current water efficiency standards in new build homes are not working and aren’t fit for the future (see here). We urgently need the new government to implement changes to Building Regulations in England to encourage water saving; reuse of water; reduce leakage and save households money. An increase in ambition of 20% across England would save 50 Mld for every 1 million new homes built. (See strategic objective 6 here).

What’s the latest?

The new government has confirmed to us that the Building Regulations Part G which covers water efficiency in new homes in England will be reviewed in 2025.
