With just 1% of businesses consuming nearly half of the public water supply used by the commercial sector, we’re calling for these high water users to report on their water-saving efforts every three years.
This accountability will help the UK meet its Environment Act target of a 9% reduction in business water use by 2038.
Our key policy ask
We want to see a requirement for very high water using businesses to report on their efforts to reduce water use.
Why is this important? Business water use makes up around 30% of public water supply use in England and Wales and just 1% of businesses use around half of that (around 1,500 Mld). We want a new policy that the 1% to be required to produce a three yearly report on their efforts to reduce water use to support the government meet the Environment Act target of reducing business water use by 9% by 2038 (See strategic objective 10 here).
What’s the latest? We have submitted our ask to government and await their response.
