Turning a drop of knowledge into a wave of change.

Born from a powerful collaboration between Northumbrian Water, Groundwork East, and Waterwise, the Water Literacy Programme is more than just training—it’s a movement. We empower individuals and organisations to take action in sustainable water management and where needed, embed positive change.

The Water Literacy Programme

The Water Literacy Programme is a learning experience, here to inspire, motivate and educate professionals to play their part in addressing the environmental impact of water scarcity in the UK. It’s an informative, accessible and action-orientated course. Through a single day’s worth of learning, participants are empowered to embed change at their organisations, at home, and in their communities. After completing the course, individuals have the opportunity to become accredited as Water Literate. Find out more and sign up on the Water Literacy Programme website.

Water Literate Organisation (WLO) Accreditation

Is your organisation ready to elevate its impact?

Our new accreditation, which builds on the Water Literacy Programme, is designed for forward-thinking organisations ready to champion water efficiency. This comprehensive journey offers you the opportunity to transform your organisation’s culture around water-saving.

1. Empowering staff (Water efficiency champion/s): Build a dedicated group of internal champions. One or more individuals have/will complete the Water Literacy Programme, become accredited and act as catalysts for change at the start of your WLO accreditation journey. The minimum number required will depend on your organisation’s size.

2. Bespoke learning (Tailored course): Create a Water Literacy course that works for your organisation. Accredited staff in your organisation who are Water Literate can develop a tailored version of the Water Literacy course to suit internal learning and development needs, all reviewed and approved by Waterwise.

3. Scaling your influence (Train the trainer session): Amplify your impact with an online ‘Train the Trainer’ session for up to 10 people. Available for accredited staff wishing to become Water Literacy trainers themselves, enabling them to roll out Water Literacy across your entire workforce.

4. ‘Walking the walk’ (Waterwise Checkmark): Demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement and be rewarded for ‘walking the walk’ on water efficiency by applying for the Checkmark for one of your buildings. Complete a self-assessment application form covering three key areas of water efficiency measures – metering/monitoring (including leaks), installed devices and fittings, and engagement/culture.

5. Blueprint for the future (3-year water-saving action plan): Ensure longevity of your organisation’s actions. Develop a strategic 3-year action plan guided by our checklist to ensure your water-saving successes are sustained and scaled over time, reviewed and approved by Waterwise.

What you’ll gain after completing the Water Literacy Programme

Once you become Water Literate, you’ll be ready to take action and inspire others to do the same. This programme provides participants with the knowledge and motivation to make a measurable difference at home and within their organisation and communities.
