Customer-side leakage accounts for up to 1.5 billion litres of water lost daily across England and Wales. To tackle this, Ofwat’s Water Efficiency Lab 2 (WEL2) competition is offering £5 million in funding for innovative projects focused on preventing, predicting, pinpointing, and fixing customer-side leaks.

Waterwise – supported by Thames Water and Anglian Water – is hosting two online collaborative partnership sessions to facilitate connection and partnership building between innovators, water companies and other partners before the 20 October 2026 deadline. These sessions are designed to complement the Ofwat in-person networking session, by allowing time to present ideas and request support, so that face-to-face networking on 10 September can be more productive.

  • Session 1: Early Pitches & Speed-Networking (7 September 2026, 3pm-5pm): Innovators present short (3–5 minute) elevator pitches covering their technology/approach across the core WEL2 focus areas. Apply to pitch by 12 noon on Thursday 3 September to secure your slot on the agenda for this session.

  • Session 2: Refinement & Partnership Facilitation (29 September 2026, 10:30am-12:30pm): Deep-dive discussions for potential applicants to share refined proposals, outline resource needs (e.g., data sharing, pilot sites, co-funding), and secure final water company support ahead of the 20 October deadline.
